Concerts I have seen, in order:

(I would appreciate any help anyone can give with the dates. The memory ain't what she used to be.)

  1. Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Carowinds Palladium, with Dad (1983?)She used the "F" word during "Bad Reputation." I was mortified and a little excited.
  2. Billy Joel, Charlotte Coliseum with Dad 2-8-84 We were in the nosebleeds, but it was a great show. "The Stranger" was incredible, but the best was the doo-wop, like "Longest Time"
  3. Weird Al Yankovic, Carowinds Palladium, 5-20-84 I owned them all on vinyl. I knew the lyrics to "I Love Rocky Road," AND I could make the hand-fart noise.
  4. Nik Kershaw and Paul Young, Carowinds Palladium 8-15-85 Oh, the humanity, and the Aqua Net!
  5. Sting, Charlotte Coliseum 11-10-85. Brandon blew me away ("Moon Over Bourbon Street"), and Omar Hakim played some mean drums, but the best was Sting solo with a guitar on "Message in A Bottle"
  6. REM with the Minutemen, Grady Cole Performing Arts Center, Charlotte, NC, D Boon's penultimate show. I remember people throwing corn dogs at the minutemen, Michael coming out with a paper bag on his head, and lots, and lots, and lots of black eyeliner. I stood in awe, not five yards from the four of them. "So. Central Rain" broke my heart.12-13-85
  7. Arlo Guthrie, Spirit Square, Charlotte, NC, Didn't play "Alice," but he did do "This Land is Your Land." 2-22-86
  8. The Spongetones (8 times that I remember. I saw most of their live shows that I could get to in 1984-early 1985. They did sixties covers, mostly Beatles and Hendrix and Creedence. I only saw them once after Steve Stoeckel left in 1985) Charlotte NC
  9. Fetchin' Bones, Connells, Pterodactyl Club, Charlotte, NC (12/31/86)? I had the biggest crush on Hope Nicholls. I loved that band-- I hope to replace my tape copy of "Bad Pumpkin."
  10. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Grady Cole Performing Arts Center, Charlotte, NC 2/10/87. I remember a lot of sweaty, middle-aged men who smelled like stale beer and cigarettes. Saw two fights.
  11. Death Squad, Church of Musical Awareness (Behind the Milestone) Charlotte, NC( Spring 1987) Only real punk show I ever went to (The Milkmen don't count) The club owner was excited because Death Squad was the first band to bring Marshall Amps in.
  12. The Cult, with Billy Idol, Charlotte Coliseum 7-30-87 I sat next to the guy who ended up with Ian's sweaty shirt after the stagedive. They made watching BIlly grope photographers almost bearable. We sat behind stage left, so I got to see Steve get passed his guitars by the roadies.
  13. Sonic Youth, Cat's Cradle, Chapel Hill, NC 9-15-87 Kim standing five feet tall. Thurston rubbing the guitar on the rafters. Beautiful noise.
  14. Dreams So Real, Cat's Cradle, Chapel Hill, NC (September 1987) Athens band. I was excited to be in that city going to concerts, so I wasn't too picky. wasn't the best show.
  15. REM, Cameron Stadium, Duke Campus, Durham, NC Frat boys singing "The One I Love" to their girlfriends. Ntalie Merchant stomping around dramatically removing a scarf she kept reattaching. Michael witht he music stand, doing "Midnight Blue" by Lou Gramm. "Rockville" was a treat.10-03-87
  16. Pressure Boys, Milestone, Charlotte, NC (Dec 1987)? The best cover of "Radar Love" that ever happened anywhere.
  17. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Memorial Stadium, Chapel Hill 4-17-88 Voodoo, man, voodoo.
  18. The Church, Memorial Stadium, Chapel Hill (late 1988?) Ticked off because they were supposed to opening for Peter Murphy on the tour, but he got sick. Really liked "Sister" and "Milky Way," though.
  19. Living Colour, Memorial Stadium, Chapel Hill 1-27-89 Vernon stumbling on stage smelling, interesting. I was right in front of the stage next to the four of them; Corey dripped sweat on me. Must have been the bicycle pants under all those lights.
  20. Fishbone, the Rialto, Raleigh, NC 2-16-89 Got in the pit. We were late to the show and missed a lot of it. Did get to hear "Party at Ground Zero."
  21. Dead Milkmen, Florida Theatre, Gainesville, FL 1-21-94 Got in the pit again. Forgot I was wearing loafers, one of which ended up on the stage. I had to go get it from a roadie.
  22. *What It Is, (local funk band my friend Kevin obsessed over) Gainesville, FL (1995)
  23. Fugazi, the Club at Firestone, Orlando FL 4-1-96 Stayed out of the pit on purpose. Big man stopped the show twice to tell people to chill out.
  24. *Tori Amos, UCF Arena, Oviedo 4-13-96 FIrst real show witn the missus. Just her, a drummer, and a guitar. Awesome. The freaks were out in force. "Me and Gun" gave my shivers shivers.
  25. *The Cure, Orlando Arena, Orlando 8-31-96 Incredible. They played everything I wanted to hear, from "Standing on a Beach" to "Disintegration," and they did most incredible "Why Can't I Be You"
  26. *Bush with Veruca Salt, Ice Palace, Tampa, FL 3-21-97 Jen, you know it's going to be loud right? THe sound guy had no clue-- too much mid and low, sounded like mud. "Machine Head" rocked.
  27. *Bauhaus, Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, 9-18-98 I got a shirt. I wasn't in the best of moods to appreciate the show, but it was incredible.
  28. *Dave Matthews Band, Mars Music Amphitheatre, West Palm, FL 7-6-02 What can I say. These guys were born to play together live. It rained until they came out. We sat on a grassy hill under our "Neat Sheet," then stood when they came out. It was a little disconcerting to be standing next to people who every word of the songs that hadn't been actually released yet, and there was this kid who kept yelling "Two by Two" and everyone around him was correcting him ("The name of the song is "Two Step!"') but it was great. The young lady next to us leant us her binoculars, but you really didn't need them with the JumboTron. "Grace Is Gone" and "Everyday (#36) Were my favorites. My son's first show -- the circle is complete :)

    NIN

    WOW.

Saw NIN last night at the ST. Pete Times Forum, with the Queens of the Stone Age as openers.

    NIN

Josh Homme, the lead singer/guitarist for Queens, was quite the axe-wileding maniac, and handled a heckler with aplomb by introducing the band's "Little Sister" with a little "background" on the song and an insult to the young man's partying and libidinous appetites. (Cleaned up for general consumption) The music was good too, especially "No One Knows"

There were a few interesting-loooking folk in the audience at the show, but for the most part people looked very normal, which I found both refreshing and a bit sad. There were a few young people, but most of us were a little long in the tooth. If Trent and company had not come out and rocked steady, I would be tempted to say that he has jumped the shark.

    Here's the setlist:

    1. Pinion
    2. Love Is Not Enough
    3. You Know What You Are
    4. Terrible Lie
    5. The Line Begins To Blur
    6. March Of the Pigs
    7. The Frail
    8. The Wretched
    9. Closer/ The Only Time
    10. Burn
    11. Gave Up
    12. Eraser
    13. Right Where It Belongs
    14. Beside You In Time
    15. The Collector
    16. Wish
    17. Only
    18. Reptile
    19. Suck
    20. Hurt
    21. The Hand That Feeds
    22. Head Like A Hole

We didn't get "Sin" or "Starf'ers, Inc." and the idiots behind us talked through "Right Where it Belongs " and "Hurt," but I could have just seen "Wish," "Suck," and "Reptile," and "You Know What You Are" and gone home with a ringing in my ears and a smile on my face.

The guitarist, Aaron North, was insane. He joined the band this February, leaving "the Icarus Line," a hardcore outfit with bad attitudes (at a Hard Rock show, Aaron used a mike stand to break into a guitar display case, took a Stevie Ray strat out and played it unti the security guards grabbed him). He flung the guitar all over the place, guiding the feedback with sweeping movements that took it over his head and behind his back, kicking water bottles into the audience, and laying down with his feet inverted on his amp during "Head Like a Hole." He smashed the guitar at the end of the show and THREW it into the audience (Trent handed his to someone int he front politely).

The drummer, Alex Carapetis, did a great job standing in for Jerome Dillon. He pounded it out and kept time with even the most difficult tunes. Not bad for a guy whose previous experience is mostly with folks like Christina Aguilera's opening band and Lenny Kravitz (the drummer for A Perfect Circle, Josh Freese, only played two shows with the band after Jerome's cardiac episode.)

Trent was buff, focused, in fine voice/scream and seemed to have taken his own advice ("Gave up trying to figure it out")and actually had fun. All the pain is still there, but the elements of theatricality and humor ("I'm glad the hurricane slowed down so we could play the show) demonstrate that he no longer seems to be down in it.

    Awesome show.

On a lighter note, I tried googling some folks from school and found the valedictorian from my graduating class as well as my best buddy from the early 90s in Gainesville.

I doubt I will write either one of them, but it is nice to know that the world is such a smaller place because of the computer.

Have a great day -- I believe we are going mower shopping in a bit.
