Well, day two starts in an hour and a half. Yesterday went pretty well; I screwed up some administrative details in homeroom, but other than that I really liked the kids and I think things are going to go fine. I need to make sure today that I get some copies made so we have things to read next week, but other than that, I think we are set.
Today, we are going to do some brainteasers on PowerPoint for a warm-up, and then we are going to do a book pass. I am going to have them write and decorate their folders and write the author and title of the books they touch today, plus one recommendation from someone else in the room. Then we will forget about the pizza lesson that didn't work in seventh period and develop a list of reasons that people don't read.
The writing kids started playing with Popular Mechanics yesterday, and we will start the dead words on Monday. Today we are going to do the lesson with the cards and the story, and they are going to write a critique of it using a word bank, and we will close with brainstorming reasons people's writing can be lame.
Seventh period was the quietest period and the least talkative; I have two students in that class that I see earlier in the day, and even they noticed. I will have to be more peepy, I mean, peppy, with them this afternoon.
Next week, we will start with the surveys and the syllabi

Well, here we go... 2.5 hours and counting. I am a little nervous, but at least I know what I am doing.
I will check in at lunch and then after school.
Happy Thursday!

Happy birthday Daniel!
And now for something completely different:
Preplanning continued today at my school.
I got to school early to work in my room , and was greeted by what can be described only as a simmering, sultry, humid wall of sticky nasty air. I was drenched by the time I put my bag down. I asked if this happened often, and was told that it only happened after a big rain (!).
Then I found out the library will be closed until September 7th because the band needs to meet there because their room is under construction.
Things began to look up after that though -- I had a great meeting with the Reading coordinator for the county about CPR (College Prep Reading). I got a new television from the media specialist (carried it from the media center to my room -- several hundred yards and two flights of stairs). I found the walk-up copier and made copies, I printed a bunch of quotes about reading, glued them on construction paper and put magnetic tape on them to affix them to the walls. I went through all my files and books and threw out what was not needed and put the rest away. I went to the Friends of the Library store and got some adolescent lit. Then I drove to Orlando, visited with Meg, cut up paper for tomorrow, and failed to access my gmail, so I made this post.
Anyway, happy birthday to my brother, who really should have been the focus of this post. I am glad we don't have to share a our celebrations on the 3rd anymore, but it would have been nice to see you. Hope you had a great day Daniel. Talk soon.
