Well, this was supposed to be the seventh day of school, but Hurricane Charley decided to come to town, so we are at home for Jen's b-day.

Highlights from the week:

  • the reading specialist was giving a lesson in a math class on selective underlining, and a kid from one of my classes came to her and said she was a senior and she hadn't passed FCAT, and she would like to come see her for some instruction. When the reading specialist asked the kid if she was in Intensive Reading, she said yes, she was in Mr. Dillon's class. The reading specialist said she told the young lady that she was lucky she had me and that I was one of the best the school had, and the kid said "That was obvious" and she was really enjoying the class.

  • Josh, a kid with one arm, told me on his notecard that he drew comics -- he brought it and showed me -- it was cute -- about toast and jellyman. He got transferred out of my class, but he still comes by to shake my hand
  • Jay, a kid who likes to draw confederate flags all over everything and say inappropriate things in class, agreed with me that we needed to figure something out so he could work and leave the others alone so I could help them. He took a desk right outside the door and did a whole FCAT unit - no problem.
  • The Intensive Writing class will bury their words next week, and they had a great time writing the eulogies. I modeled it this time, saying goodbye to "dude." By far the cutest one is Jonathan's -- he is saying goodbye to "ass" and talked about the fun times he had kicking him and pinching his cheeks.
  • I am getting quite a bit of exercise walking up and down the stairs, and now the golf cart is broken, so during Crime Watch I have to walk outside all period and supervise two young ladies named Heather.
  • Brought the guitar in and did a great lesson with the writing kids about using the five senses. One of them even licked the guitar to taste it (yuck). I played Purple Haze and Nothing Else Matters for them so they could hear ti sound different.
  • I had them all in centers -- they liked it and I was able to do fluency testing on all the reading kids.
  • The parking lot (a piece of paper with "parking lot" written on it - the kids who have questions write them on post-its and put them on the parking lot so I can answer them by the end of the period) - is a big hit with sixth period (the tough class). They like asking silly questions and hearing my sarcastic responses.
  • Several of the veteran teachers have asked me for advice with lessons, and everyone loves my room -- it is not quite as cluttered as the one at HP, and it smells great because I have a vanilla air freshener.
  • I got three computers in my classroom -- they are all Pentium 2's running Win95, but they do have Internet access and the FCAT software, as well as Office 97. I am learning to live with what I've got.
  • Today is the birthday of my lovely wife -- and we get to have a hurricane party at her parents' house.
  • speaking of houses, ours has landscaping, but no window pane in the back -- I am glad we don't own it yet.

Six peeps. Wishing I could have gone to Gainesville but grateful for the afternoon off Fu. Happy birthday to Jen Fu. Happy birthday to Sam on Wednesday Fu.
