Well, here we are at the end of another week of school. No hurricanes this week, and no huge surprises.

I got my new fourth period class on Monday, and had to continue administering a Stanford standardized test to a bunch of juniors and seniors who hadn't passed FCAT and didn't know me from Adam. It went well, though, and I know all 28 names now. We had fun this week getting to know each other and now they are basically on the same page as the other classes.

Centers went better this week -- they got papers back, so they saw that they can't play around like they had been and still get things accomplished.

This week we read "Important Things" - a short story about kids bugging their mom to tell them the "Important Things" and we did our first literature based FCAT review -- "Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. The poor babies all thought the husband came back to life...

Today we are going to turn in our reading journals, having logged six hours, and we are also going to write a nice little essay about the reading we have done this week, focusing on character.

They will have three targets they have to hit in their writing:

1. In no less than ten lines of writing, summarize the events that happened in your reading this week, making sure to discuss at least one conflict.

2. Pick two characters from your reading and discuss their similarities and differences. You must discuss at least one personality trait and at least one physical trait. After discussing the two characters, compare them to yourself.

3. Evaluate the way the author created the characters, answering the following questions with examples if possible: (a) Did they sound real when they talked? (b) Did they make decisions that made sense given their personalities? (c) Who in your life (or in movies, tv, comics, or other books) did these characters remind you of?

See you this evening!
