Well, here we go again.

Dr. Lennard has cancelled school in Hillsborough for Monday in advance of Ivan.

There was much rejoicing in seventh period.

The kids are watching "Roger Rabbit" -- the trivia section on IMSB for that movie is HILARIOUS.

I read my friend Tim's blog about the hurricances -- I am very jealous because his is much more literate than mine. I need to get off the computer though, so I will just have to wallow in the muck and mire of my incessant comparison of myself to those whom I respect, admire and envy.

To those who do not live in Florida -- you might get a real kick out of the whole "gas rationing" scare that happened today -- the Internet can be a powerful and stupid thing sometimes.

  • Miami Herald
  • First Coast News -- with video

So of course the result is everybody went and gassed up and now the stations are all dry. People are stupid.

Six peeps. Time with family Fu. Stupid people and gas Fu. NOT ANOTHER DAY OFF!!! FU!!

Getting ready to go home and indulge in my latest infatuation -- XIII!

I am feeling very confident in my gaming abilities lately -- I cleared four levels in the past two days.

Does anyone have a suggestion of my next adventure? I like RPGs and FPSs, and I like Xbox a little better than the Playstation.

I am really getting excited about the house -- we are drawing ever closer to the closing date. I am not looking forward to packing everything up, but I can't wait to have my own yard again, and my own carpet, and a shower that doesn't groan beneath my less-than-massive-at-present-thank-you-stairs-at-my-new-school bulk and new appliances and my lovely wife and our growing family (I am thinking about getting a fish for the new house and naming her Kathreen - kind of a pun on the third try (we have owned two fish previously {one was the first Valentine's present my lovely wife ever gave me and the other was a Winter Park impulse buy} and each was named Ka-the-leen) and little homage to A Christmas Story wrapped into one.)

Saw a cute little shenanagans behind the curtain comedy of errors called "Noises Off" this weekend (I don't think I have ever truly been disappointed in a Michael Caine film - but The Man Who Would Be King (if you visit the site check out the discussion board about the song that Connery sings on the rope bridge -- geeks are funny folk) and Educating Rita are my favs), and I plan to watch Michael Douglas in "Falling Down" tonight.

I got subs for my CRISS training in November and put in for a sub for the closing on the house, read Romiette and Julio, and had great fun with a bunch of teens who REALLLLLLLY did not want to be at school today. Yeaaaaaa! Short week!

Have a great evening everyone, and I am glad you have power!

Seven peeps. Fun trip to the grocery store Fu. Awesome discoveries Fu. General Tso's for dinner AND lunch Fu. Leaving before four pm Fu.

    NO SCHOOL IN HILLSBOROUGH TOMORROW!!

Which is actually a good thing, because I am not quite done with hte grading I would need to have finished -- that means we will have a three-day week next week, and it also means we will start on our "block day," but it is worth being able to play my video game tomorrow.

On side note, I would like to wage a little war on behalf of correct pronunciation of Spanish culinary terms.

Twice now I have ordered dishes in Tijuana Flats and Chilis to be corrected b the server on the pronunciation of the word "chipotle." The servers insisted the term was pronounced "CHEE POLL TAY" instead of "CHEE POAT LAY," as would make sense phonetically given the spelling.

A quick search proved me correct, of course:

  • Yahoo Pronunciation Guide
  • http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/chipotle.htm

I don't know why they bother trying to correct me -- but the pronunciation of theirs speaks to what I see as a larger problem -- serverdyslexia. I think they truly believe the word to be speleld "chipolte." I firmly believe that these restaurants should institute remedial pronunciation classes immediately so that this butchering of the lingua epula.

I am sure if I cogitate on the subject long enough I will be albe to come up with a few more terms that are subject to this heinous, insidious transposition.

    Just gimme a minute...

If only there were a restaurant that served a nucular, I mean nuclear fusion cuisine.

In the meantime, visit the Chioptle Grill website -- overly Flashy, but fun:

Well, Frances has been downgraded, but you wouldn't know it from here.

The Gainesville Dillon's have been without power since Sunday at lunchtime -- they are having steak and eggs cooked on the grill for breakfast.

Here is the major damage by us -- goes to show you shouldn't park near trees in a hurricane.

    Poor Jaguar.

The ground is completely saturated, which led to the tree coming over -- you can see where the wall around the porch was upended by the roots.

Obi finally got over himself and was able to do his business -- he doesn't like getting his feet wet, but right now he has no choice.

We still have power -- we never lost it, as we can attest because our downstairs neighbor kept fragging his opponents until the wee hours of the morning.

Hope everyone else escaped with minimal damage -- looks like we dodged another bullet.

Well -- it is 4:53pm, the storm is right on top of us, and the biggest inconvenience we have suffered to date is the guy below us playing Halo at full volume (there is nothing quite as discomfitting as a rapid-fire machine gun at 75 dB massaging you as you lay on the couch trying to watch a Poirot mystery on BBC America.

    Ho hum.

We are getting a lot of rain, and the wind has been pretty constant, but we have power still, as well as a lot of ice and a bathtub full of water.

I suppose safe is better than sorry.

Watch a movie of the wind

    (100_0217.MOV, 1.285 Mb)

The wind has really started to pick up -- there is a tree down in opur parking lot, and several people are parked under one that is leaning precariously -- we decided that was an example of vehiclular Darwinism, and we would just let things fall as they may. We are really fine -- don't worry. We are on the second floor, so flooding won't be an issue, and the next apartment over will break the fall of any trees.

I will check in as the situation deteriorates.
