Again, the king of procrastination has struck.

I had not graded any of the thirty essays the SAT kids wrote and I had not taken the test myself for this weekend yet (I got a 720 verbal and a 740 Writing score -- I think the new test is harder -- you are allowed to miss fewer questions to do as well.) I got that done by 1:30 (30 essays in 3.5 hours -- that is almost the right pace, considering I comment on them -- the real graders do 12 an hour).

I also have progress reports this week (on Thursday -- they delayed them since we have Florida Writes this week) so of course I have to get a bunch of stuff graded and put it in the grading program. Bleccch.

On the cinematic front, we (Obi, myself, and my lovely wife) watched Mystic River last night.

My lovely wife called the whodunnit part of the film way before I did. It was a well-desgined mystery and definitely was honest in its deductions.

I thought Penn did his usual wonderful job -- he is a great physical actor and was born to play shady, violent, suffering men -- but we agreed that Tim Robbins stole the show as the shellshocked victim of childhood abuse, Dave. He deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting that he won.

Eastwood's direction was great, and the cinematography was superb. Two thumbs up, as long as you are in a good mood BEFORE you press "PLAY."

Well, back to the grindstone. Quizzes and journals and letters, oh my.

Five peeps. Would be higher if I could rest on the weekend Fu.

The past two days I have forsaken my pedagogical responsibilities in an attempt to recuperate from the ravages of the dreaded creeping crud; a virus that has claimed the speaking voices and general good health of many Floridians.

I feel better today, but I still have the runny nose and cough. Regardless -- it is time to return to school. Tomorrow is an easy day because it is in the lab. I hope today went alright with the kiddos.

Gilmore Girls was pleasant last night -- Richard and Emily are back together and will renew their vows next week, at which ceremony Chris and Luke will square off.

For an interesting analysis of why the show is so popular this season, you can visit http://www.thewb.com/exclude/OffSiteFeature/0,8637,206662,00.html to see Lauren Graham (Lorelai herself) explain the importance of breath mints and shaving your legs.

And note the ebullient cohost to the left of the interviewer -- it is none other than Michaela Pereira, my favorite ex-host of TechTV's TechLive.

Small world.

Imagine the curiosity and determination it would take to try every combination of area code and number to try to find out if "867-5309" does indeed belong to Jenny. Well, imagine no more! Some guy named Dan (apparently) has done just that over one weekend with free long distance, and he posted the results here: http://danstheman.com/Jenny.htm. I hope he did get that life he was interested in.

Happy Humpday everyone.

Six peeps. The most fun you can have while being sick Fu. Obi being happy that daddy stayed home Fu. Two days off and I didn't even watch one movie Fu.

Uh oh. Two consecutive posting days -- is it possible? Yes, true believers, it is.

Stan Lee is going to be on 60 minutes this week beweeping his outcast state (I just spent five minutes trying to find a Shakespeare line I remembered as "bemoaning my downcast state" -- those words appear in none of his works -- I hate it when you remember things incorrectly and are sure that it happened the way you recall even though the memory is a complete fabrication) and complaining about the movies they are making of his works. I think he should complain about the Thing's costume in the movie. I guess he looks more like the classic Ben Grimm of the early books, but I liked the 70's Ben with the angular appearance better. I hope they don't mess it up too badly.

I am full of generic Sudafed and generic mucus, so I think I am going to bring out the big guns (diphenhydramine) and hit the proverbial hay.

Can't wait for tomorrow's "24" -- last week was a doozy. If you have not been watching the show, you might find the debate over the racist overtones of the Muslim fanatic family on the show. Personally, I don't think it is reactionary stereotyping at all -- the show does a great job of taking people who seem normal outwardly and exposing their innermost failings and treacherous natures. No one seemed to mind so much when we were stereotyping Eastern Europeans in the mid and late 80s in flicks like "Red Dawn," so I don't think that these thoughtfully created, three-dimensional characters who happen to be Middle Eastern should be railed against. This is the same mentality that would have us NEVER again depict a black man as a drug dealer or thug for fear that we would then generalize this stereotype and cross to the other side of the operating table when our black surgeon enters the room. There are many more ACTUAL instances of horrible stereotyping and hateful portrayals on show like South Park and on websites like JibJab to keep people busy with fairness and appropriateness; leave poor Kiefer and the chick from Third Watch alone -- they are trying to be in love while all the nuclear plants in the country are getting ready to melt down.

Five peeps. Being thsick thsucks. [sniff] Fu.
