Well, here we are at the end of the first week of school.

I went in on Tuesday (a day early) and had three days of preplanning with many meetings, but I still have my room pretty much together.

I have twelve working computers with Interweb access, a video projector and large screen, a Windows XP box, an HP LaserJet 4050N, and twice the square feet that I started in last year. I have more books than I had last year, and I am trying not to junk up my desk (we'll see how that goes).

The English department is buying jerseys for us to wear and personalize with our favorite literary character or author's name on the back. I agonized over my choice, then put "Morpheus," then changed it to "Dream King," because I thought kids would confuse it with the Matrix, then was told that that name is a little too conceited and possibly displays an unhealthy desire to be a little TOO important in students' lives.

I am at a loss now. Lucas never wrote books. Tom Robbins is a hippie. Douglas Adams was not very prolific. Stephen King is a hack who needs an editor. I don't really love Le Guin, though I respect her. I honestly don't remember reading Tolkien. Shakespeare is taken.

I think I am going to have to go with "Dream." It is not conceited or suggestive, and can be taken as a verb as well. Cool. I like making decisions.

Well, today was interesting -- I had an AP interview at 11:00am on the first day of pre-planning.

When we got back from Carolina, my lovely wife saw that there was a position posted for a local high school. I tried to fax the resume by the deadline, but got the wrong number. I decided then to fax it again with a cover letter saying I just got back into town. The secretary called yesterday, and I called her back this morning and got an interview for 11:00. I got up in the middle of a presentation (I was trying to sit in the back, but they moved where the speaker was...) and left for the interview, which was a little enigmatic. Some people are hard to read. We talked for a while, and he realized that my resume was submitted outside the window (the secretary evidently didn't realize it and he interviewed 23 other people for the position). So, he said that we could keep on with the interview since he thought he was going to have another position open in a week. We shall see.

Room is pretty much set up -- I got a ton more practice books (mostly HSCT stuff, but that is pretty much the same thing anyway). I rearranged the room and it makes much more sense. It almost looks (dare I say it) ORGANIZED!!!!

Time to eat dinner -- early to rise and long to sit tomorrow -- training all day on IPDP (ippydippy) Individualized Professional Development Plan -- targeting instruction to test scores. Party on, Wayne.

Here we go again --

I was able to get into my classroom yesterday (the day before preplanning) and get my room mostly set-up. I have 12 working computers with network access, and all of the messes I had last year (boxes stacked everywhere and junky shelves) have gone by the by. My computer is set up, and I only need to track down a tv, laser printer, and computer monitor, all of which are on a rolling cart that apparently didn't have enough tape on it to remind folks whose room it belonged in.

I have made the coffee and my lovely wife's lunch, and now I am off to the showers. This is the most I have done before 6:06am since May. I am yawning already.

Saw "Sexy Beast" and "Jackie Brown" over the past two days. I must say I enjoyed the Ben Kingsley flick over the Quentin one. Pam Grier was excellent, but Elmore Leonard is difficult to translate to the screen (about the only successful one I have ever seen done was "Get Shorty." I think Quentin is much better when he is working with his own material. Kingsley however is a wonderful psychotic. Watching this film after Gandhi makes you appreciate what it is an actor does to get into the head of a character.

Happy Wedensday!
