Saw Rent last night.
I liked it. A lot. The cast was fantastic, especially Jee Martin and Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Collins and Angel. Chris Columbus (Gremlins and the first two harry Potter movies) did a great job as director with the source material, and the songs were just as moving on screen as they were on stage.
We had some idiots who were dragged to the film by their girlfriends apparently and who decided to comment on the proceedings by "laughing" loudly at things that weren't funny during the previews and the opening credits. My favorite part fo the film was when Idina Menzel as Maureen the performance artist was doing her over-the-top act with sucking on the udders of the metaphysical cow (which is SUPPOSED to get laughs) and the guys thought they were laughing ironically.
Having listened to the highlights soundtrack oodles of times, and having been to a road company performance three years ago, I was quite pleased to see and hear the original cast sing those songs I love so much (especially "La Vie Boheme" and "I'll Cover You (Reprise)")
The film got mixed reviews. I think the best review I read was by ... surprise! A critic from the NYT. I archived the article here.
The movie won't be opening up any new audiences to Jonathan Larson's vision of La Boheme in 1989 NYC, but it won't tick off anyone who fell in love with Mimi and Angel the first time around, either.

Happy Turkey Day everybody!
Hope everyone is having as great a menu as we are -- no kids, but I made potato salad, we are having a 15 pound turkey cooked in a bag, green bean casserole, squash and onions, stuffing, cranberries, broccoli, mashed potatoes and gravy, cauliflower, and assorted desserts.
We had a successful batch of ice cream from our ice cream maker as well, so we can have homemade ice cream wiht our pie.
Did not watch the parade this year -- spent some time putting up some Celtic Knot lacquered boxes on our north wall in the living room and doing the last minute cleaning -- everyone is coming to our house for the holiday (eveyrone in Tampa at least).
Eat a lot and lay around on the couch and be nice to each other!
Here is a funny thing for you to enjoy -- right - click and save as:
Thanksgiving Song
It is a little on the mature side of things (baby oil) so don't listen to it in mixed company...

Stain Remover - Laundry Stain Removal - Zout Removes Tough Stains
This was not a good morning.
I woke up at 5:15am and remembered that the turkey we were to eat for Thanksgiving was sitting, instead of in the fridge where it was supposed to be, in the back seat of my car.
Then I went to the dryer to get some socks, and discovered that I had left a ball point pen in the pocket of my Dockers, which were ALL in the laundry, save one pair, as well as three pairs of Jen's pants. Curse you, o large-capacity washer!!
I freaked and was resigned to a Dockerless future, but I did an Internet search and asked some frinds at school what they would do to try to get the stains out.
Debbie recommended Oxy-Clean, soaking the clothes for as long as possible (days). IN Publix, I saw a beautiful new bottle of a stain remover I had not tried, so I got it, too, as well as a can of Suave hairspray.
The Zout stain remover was incredible. I sprayed each stain and rubbedin the solution with a scrub brush, and watched as most of the stains disappeared. For the tougher stains, I let the Zout set and tehn speayed it with the Suave. The clothes are currently soaking in the tub with a ton of Oxy-Clean, and I am relatively confident that order and cleanliness will be restored to the pants.
Wooo hooo.
Saw Harry Potter yesterday -- Goblet of Fire. I felt like it was a little rushed and packed full of superficial references to things that weren't completely necessary to move the plot along. Ralph Fiennes was nothing to write home about either, but still, Radcliffe is nearly perfect as Harry, and Emma Watson is PERFECT as Hermione. The twins, Fred and George, were featured much more prominently here and did a fantastic job, and I loved everyone's shaggy locks. There was more right with the film than there was wrong, and it is definitely worth a look-see.
