Pretty Girls Against Boys make Graves with Meat Puppets At the Drive-In

I downloaded Pretty Girls Make Graves' "The New Romance," Girls Against Boys' " House of GVSB," At the Drive-In's "In-Casino-Out," and the Meat Puppet's "Up on the Sun."

I love them all -- but especially Pretty Girls Make Graves -- they really have a neat indie vibe (sort of New Pornographers/Bloc Party-esque). THe Alternative Press said -- "At once daring and danceable, The New Romance is the best Talking Heads record Bikini Kill never made."

At the Drive-In is neato -- more yelling than Spoon, but less than Fugazi. Strange, changing tempos, very emotional, but incredibly melodic - Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez went on to form the Mars Volta.

Girls Vs. Boys is neat too -- quirky, jerky, but fun to be around. All-Music lists Fugazi as an influence (noticing a pattern in my taste lately?) and compares them to Braniac and Sonic Youth. I don't think there are as experimental and strange as Kim and Lee and Thurston, but the vibe is there.

Lastly, the Meat Puppets album is a classic, and one that I used to own on vinyl. Jangle jangle, mumble mumble. Not one for those who like vocal precision, but if Michael Stipe adopted Tom Waits' and Belle and Sebastian's lovechild, the offspring might date this band.

Had a delicious linner at Chili's and then second dinner at Applebee's after church. Love them fajitas and nachos.

Have a great day -- we may watch a Hitchcock flick, or I may run by Blockbuster and try to do Ocean's 23 as we originally planned (both movies, back-to-back). I like Sundays that aren't followed by work!

The Billy Joel concert Thursday was awesome, or as my lovely daughter would say, AWSOME!

Here is the setlist as far as I can remember, with a little help from theJacksonville setlist (I will post an accurate one later).

Prelude/Angry Young Man
My Life
Everybody Loves You Now
NY State Of Mind
Stilleto
Zanzibar
Allentown
Sometimes A Fantasy
Ballad of Billy the Kid
Goonight Saigon
Movin' Out
Lullabye
Keepin' The Faith
I Go To Extremes
We Didn't Start The Fire
Big Shot
Still Rock 'n' Roll to Me
You May Be Right

Encores:

River Of Dreams
Only The Good Die Young

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Piano Man

He toured with the guys, including David Rosenthal, and the fabulous multi-instrumentalist Crystal Taliefero. I didn't realize how involved she had become in his music, but since River of Dreams she has been his musical director!

The horns were awesome, and the stage was set up so that the obstructed view seats behind the stage actally were great -- there was no backdrop,a nd they had two giant video screens all to themselves!

We were in the nosebleed seats to the right of the stage, but they weren't that bad -- they had video on the jumbotron, and Billy was on a turntable and had two rotating electric pianos that he played on.

There were drunk boys behinds WOOOOOOHOOO-ing and singing off key, but it didn't bother me so much. It was a huge crowd -- the 35 minute trip down there took an hour -- we had just gotten to our seats when the show started (a little late, thankfully).

I loved hearing the old tunes -- especially "You May Be Right" and "Stiletto". He really does still rock. He had me a little worried with his lack of facility with the mike stand -- he almost beaned himself a couple of times. Other than that the show was very high-energy and a great time -- it is neat to watch really talented folks play.

He did close with Piano Man, harmonica and all, and let the audience sing the chorus -- it was really neat. I can't imagine what that must feel like for him, to know we love his music so much.

He did close with his signature line -- "Don't take any shizznit (edited for mixed audiences) from anybody."

GUess who I am going to go see with Joe in March!!! Guess!!! I bet you can't!!! Think black and d-rock and Andrew and First and Last and Always! Woohoo!

Off to see the Piano Man himself -- in 63 minutes. It is great to live near the expressway.

Have a great night, everybuggy.

Second day in a row I have had meetings that have kept me at school late -- until after 4:30 both days. However, I am getting better at not being so tired by the end of the day from the kids, so it is not so bad.

Had a bit of a rough moment with a young lady who is having drama issues with another young lady. They went to peer mediation, and hopefully everything will be hunky-dory on the morrow.

I am being much more organized this time, and classes are running themselves well so far.

I have to start grading stuff for this nine weeks, but honestly that probably won't happen until the weekend, because I have class tomorrow night until 8:00pm, Billy Joel concert is Thursday night, and I trek to Hogtown on Friday.

Tonight I will eat dinner and read my book and go to sleep.

Hope all is well elsewhere.
