April Fool's, Hungry Harry's, and Goodbye to Tina

I didn't pull any jokes on the kids this year -- it is rather different only having them for one semester vs. YEARS at a time. Plus, the date of jest fell on a Saturday, and March 31st is no substitute for the real thing.

On Saturday, we had houseguests! Celeste and Joe brought Zachary over for Hungry Harry's Bar-B-Que -- the ribs and pulled pork were wonderful.

They stayed for part of the Florida Final Four game -- which I paused and watched with glee.

Sunday found me under the weather -- what began as allergies has degenerated into the creeping crud, I fear.

Sunday also found me upset at the loss of that magical extra hour of sleep that the gods bestow upon us following the autumnal equinox.

I discovered (after researching it because people had differing opinions) that Arizona and Hawaii are the only remaining states that do not observe DST. Indiana once had a complicated system, but they voted to move to DST in April of last year.

I also learned something TERRIBLE -- they are extending DST from the first Sunday in April lasting until the last Sunday in October to starting the second Sunday in MARCH and lasting until NOVEMBER!! I am only going to have my extra hour for FIVE MONTHS now!! I protest! Here is the link for more information: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html

On a more somber note

One of my colleagues passed away this weekend. Tina was a vibrant person and a great educator -- we worked together on reading endorsement classes and collaboratively planned several lessons. She always had a smile and she really "got it" -- she was there to teach kids, not just foist dead literature on them and click her tongue when they didn't do things perfectly without instruction. She was quite young -- early thirties, and was a truly good person. Today was pretty heavy at school; they had crisis counselors for the kids and the teachers.

I don't like losing friends like that for no reason. I wish there was some lesson to be learned or some good that could come from this tragedy, but like most really sad things, it is just sad.

Hug your loved ones tonight, and be really really careful with each other.
