Eric and Joe are Super Colossal!
Saw Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani at the House of BLues in Orlando last night.
Great show -- we got there a bit late because of I-4 traffic -- Eric aws in the middle of a country number -- but on the birght side we didn;t stand in line and got a great position in front of the bar -- drunks bumped into me all night, but we had a great view -- stage center in front of the railing - one row back.
There were a couple of obnoxious drunks who kept bumping into bpeople, and I was playing buffer with one of them and my lovely wife -- he ended up bumping into another lady whose BIG husband was not too happy -- I moved the drunk guy out of the way for them -- it is nice to play administrator -- even in bars.
Eric was good, but the sound on his mike was terrible. His set was too short, but we did hear "SRV," "Righteous," and a GREAT version of "Cliffs of Dover." His sound was rich and clean, and his fingers just FLEW. It wasn't perfect (he muffed a couple of high runs at the end of COD), but that added humantiy to the performance.
Joe was technically perfect -- he was playing several JS1200s -- including one with a "Super Colossal" paint job.
The highlights for me were "Cool#9," "Summer Song," "Satch Boogie," "Super Colossal," "Crowd Chant," and "Always With Me, Always With You." He still had Jeff Campatelli on the drums, but Stu was no longer on the bass.
Joe likles to show of his chops, and he does have them, but it is kind of like going to a guitar shop with someone who plays better than you and knows it. He didn't take any risks -- he was in perfect control and hardly broke a sweat during the performance. The feedback and tremolo control were great, and he IS a master of tone, but he needs to figure out a way not to come across as so cold and technical.
Regardless of the shortcomings, the show was awesome.
I highly recommend the Satriani albums "Super Colossal" and "Live in San Francisco" and the CD of Johnson's Austin City Limits show -- they rock.
Hope everyone is having a good Saturday -- we are off to gather ome of grandmother's furniture from the storage unit.
